Mel Middleton: Bridging Art, Architecture, and Memory

A Greenville, SC-based artist, Mel Middleton has been quietly painting since 1996, finding inspiration in the beauty of cherished memories and nature’s simple elegance. Mel’s creative journey has been a lifelong passion that seamlessly blends her background as a licensed architect with her art practice. In 2021, she brought her paintings into the public eye and hasn’t looked back.

Mel’s paintings reflect her dual passions for architecture and the natural world. From evocative landscapes and floral still lifes to architectural subjects, her slightly impressionistic style—with touches of abstraction—brings stories and memories to life on the canvas. Each piece is inspired by a memory of a person, place, or specific time, and Mel captures the essence of these moments with sophistication and depth.

Her love of nature stems from growing up on a creek in a small farm community outside Beaufort, SC. Childhood days were spent exploring, drawing, and creating imaginary spaces beneath the tree canopies of her home. This “sense of place” still deeply influences her work today. She strives to evoke emotions tied to specific locations, smells, and sounds—whether it’s the scent of her grandmother’s garden, creaky front porches, or the salty air of pluff mud. These sensations find their way into her paintings, where she seeks to capture the feeling of those moments.

As both an artist and an architect, Mel draws from her love of the built environment, whether it’s the classical architecture of Europe or the weathered barns along country roads. Her paintings become visual representations of these feelings and memories, blending a lifetime of experiences with her appreciation for design. This connection between art and architecture allows her to offer something unique—a deep understanding of how art can transform spaces, rooted in both personal experience and technical skill.

When she’s not painting or designing custom residential homes, Mel enjoys spending time in her garden, hiking along nearby trails, or relaxing by the lake with her family. Whether traveling to new places or reflecting on the beauty of familiar ones, her creative spirit is always at work.
